Corrosion Conference Explores How To Make Corrosion Prevention a Policy and Planning Priority
Air Force Secretary Wynne Accepts Invitation to Deliver Keynote Address
By Cynthia Greenwood
Slowly, but surely, the armed services are making corrosion prevention a high priority. The Government Accountability Office recently urged the Pentagon and Services to budget and plan for the long-term preservation of military weapons and infrastructure before projects are fully underway.
From December 3-7, corrosion experts and DoD officials will speak about the challenges of integrating corrosion control into the DoD culture at the Tri-Service Corrosion Conference. This year’s conference theme is "Integrating Corrosion Prevention and Control in Policy, Planning, and Programming." Michael W. Wynne, Secretary of the Air Force, has accepted an invitation to deliver the keynote speech at the Wednesday night banquet. Secretary Wynne served as the first DoD Corrosion Executive from 2003 until 2005.
This year, the Air Force will lead the technical program. "Continuing the tradition from the very first Tri-Service Corrosion Conference, which has been held every second or third year since 1967, the technical lead of the conference is rotated among the military departments," said Daniel J. Dunmire, conference chairman and leader of the Pentagon-based DoD Corrosion Policy and Oversight initiative.
The conference—sponsored by the DoD Corrosion Office and supported by NACE International—will take place at the Hyatt Regency Denver. It starts at 11:30 a.m. on Monday and continues until Thursday evening.
Besides the keynote presentations, events of interest include an international corrosion panel and a corrosion education panel. In addition, the DoD Corrosion Forum will start at 8 a.m. on Monday morning and again from 8 a.m. to noon on Friday (before and after the conference begins and ends). An international Allies Panel is tentatively scheduled for Thursday. The Air Force of Scientific Research will also conduct concurrent sessions during the week. Ralph Adler, a research metallurgist at the Army Research Laboratory, will direct the Student Poster Session inside the exhibit hall. Other events include tours, a free afternoon before the Wednesday evening banquet, and an impressive array of exhibits.
