DoD Corrosion Office Produces Second Video on the Science of Corrosion
DVD Versions of New Corrosion Videos Available to Public in 2008

What is the definition of corrosion? In general, it involves the gradual destruction of a material through a chemical action. The chemical actions that cause corrosion are diverse and more difficult to explain. How do you stop corrosion from pushing DoD’s weapon and infrastructure systems into decline? These are tough questions, even for experts. But more important, how does a behemoth government agency like DoD encourage Congress and the public to learn more about its efforts to prevent corrosion?
"Understanding and Countering Corrosion will be narrated by Levar Burton, the actor and director renowned for his portrayal of Kunta Kinte in the 1977 TV miniseries Roots."

In 2007 the DoD Corrosion Office partnered with Bruno White Entertainment on three separate training videos for the public and the corrosion professional. The first video, titled In Focus: The War on Corrosion, is 14 minutes long and relates how DoD is waging war against corrosion. It is now available for public distribution. "We will premier the video to corrosion experts in the military and industry at the Tri-Service Corrosion Conference from December 3-7," said Daniel J. Dunmire, leader of the Pentagon-based DoD Corrosion Policy and Oversight initiative.
The DoD Corrosion Office plans to provide a full DVD version of In Focus: The War on Corrosion, beginning December 3 at the Tri-Service conference. The Office will produce 2,000 copies and distribute them free to members of the general public, Congress, and their key staff. After the week of December 3, the public can download a four-minute segment of the video from the DoD Corrosion Exchange Web site at www.corrdefense.org.
The second video will focus on the science of corrosion. Currently in production and titled Understanding and Countering Corrosion, it contains more advanced subject matter and will be used on a new DoD Corrosion Learning Module that NACE International is developing. "This video will give high school and college students and DoD employees lessons in the science of corrosion," explained Dunmire.
"The second video uses techniques such as time-lapse photography to show what happens when aluminum corrodes, for instance. "We’ll show how the metal gets thicker and weaker and how you can mitigate this type of corrosion. We hope that our first 14-minute corrosion awareness video will be a teaser to this more advanced video on corrosion." Understanding and Countering Corrosion will be narrated by Levar Burton, the actor and director renowned for his portrayal of Kunta Kinte in the 1977 TV miniseries Roots. The video will be distributed in the summer of 2008, Dunmire added.
The DoD Corrosion Office and Bruno White Entertainment are making plans to produce a video corrosion training game for release on DVD at the end of 2008. Pine Technical College has agreed to assist with the production effort.
