Effective October 1st, the DoD corrosion Web site transitioned from www.DoDCorrosionExchange.org to www.CorrDefense.org. The new site is a state-of-the-art corrosion prevention and control information management and distribution e-portal. The CorrDefense Web site is sponsored and managed by the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition Technology and Logistics (OUSD(AT&L)), Office of Corrosion Policy and Oversight. The Web site has been designated as one of the cornerstones in the DoD's long-term strategy for corrosion prevention and mitigation detailed in 10 U.S.C. 2228.
Today, more than ever, the U.S. armed services are partnering with academia, industry, and other parts of government to extend the life cycles of its weapons and far-flung military facilities. Corrosion practitioners, and the knowledge they spread, are vital to the DoD's most critical mission—ensuring readiness and safety across the globe using technically sound and cost-effective practices.
In the case of the CorrDefense Web site, the common concerns, problems, and interests center on preventing, controlling, and reducing the cost of corrosion in terms of dollars, safety, and operational readiness, particularly as it relates to DoD military equipment and infrastructure. Using a community of practice strategy combined with quality content and a robust suite of information-sharing and collaboration tools will allow members to freely collaborate and share ideas, data, information, and knowledge online 24/7 in an open forum or secured environment tailored to their needs. CorrDefense will be a free service for all individuals and organizations from industry, academia, and government who have an interest in corrosion, particularly as it relates to DoD weapon systems, equipment, related commercial assets, and infrastructure.
The DoD Corrosion Prevention and Control (CPC) Integrated Product Team (IPT) is working hard to ensure that the new CorrDefense Web site will contribute to DoD's fight against corrosion and also will be of value to both visitors and members. While all of the planned functionality for members is not currently available, the new Web site does contain a wealth of information and several useful features. The CPC IPT invites you to pay a first visit to www.CorrDefense.org. Subsequent e-mails will notify you when additional content and functionality are added over the next several weeks.
