  • For its Rotorcraft, Navy is Switching to Aluminum Gearboxes
    For years, three of the Navy's helicopter platforms have shown severe corrosion on their main and tail rotor gearboxes, resulting from their magnesium construction. Ben Craig interviewed Bill Nickerson, a materials engineer at NAVAIR, and learned what steps the Navy took to replace some gearbox components with aluminum, while mitigating corrosion other magnesium parts as long as possible.     The DoD Corrosion Policy and Oversight Office has released two new reports as part of the second phase of a broad-based landmark study on the cost of corrosion for all military equipment and infrastructure.
